A Spirited Adventure

This was a getaway like no other. At Cross Africa & Co. we like to ask our clients upfront about the type of experience they are looking for. Sometimes the opportunity arises to take them on a Spirited Adventure.

Lutz Otto is a charismatic and passionate individual who only wants to share his knowledge and love for life, and the African Bushveld, with his clients. With the most contagious laugh I have ever heard, Lutz was our guide for our socially distant excursion into a concession situated west of the Kruger National Park, close to Phalaborwa.  Camp is situated on the Greater Letaba River, in an area of wilderness that is wild and only touched by the raw palms of survival. The birding along the river is superb, and encountering elephant in the camp is not unusual.

We chose to go for the “glamping” option. We stayed in camp every night, in a permanent tent with warm water, solar power and en suite facilities. (For those who are looking to get a little bit closer to the ground, Spirited Adventures offers a trail option where you walk from campsite to campsite each day, carrying all of your own provisions and camping gear. Sleeping out under the stars in the African bushveld is a truly special experience, but not for the faint hearted.) Each morning we would grab our warm coffee and set off in search of the perfect walking trail. Every trail is the perfect trail, with tracks and sightings telling a new story every day. We tracked 2 male buffalo for 3 kms, and at last we caught them, only to stand and appreciate their shy attitude and reluctance to see us. We would return to camp for lunch, a nap, and then set off for a shorter walk until sunset. The fire was always burning in camp when we returned, and we would cook our food and sit around the fire, telling tales of bush encounters, and life stories from the ever-entertaining backup guide Chris.

At the time of our trip, Covid-19 was very much a presence in all of our lives. The fear, the hope, the despair. It was very apparent that the virus had affected us each in its own way. What a privilege to be in such a beautiful place in the world, surrounded by peace. For a moment, all our worries disappeared and all we had to focus on was the mindful meditation of putting one foot in front of the other. Lutz facilitated one of the most fascinating experiences of my life. Not just from a walking adventure, but from an introspective learning experience. His subtle hints and gentle nudges of the conversation, really allowed for great personal growth, if you were open to it.

We laughed. We learned. We returned to Johannesburg with renewed energy. A huge thank you to the Spirited Adventures team for a truly memorable getaway. I can’t wait to go back for the camping option. If you would like to have a taste of what we experienced, please let us know at Cross Africa & Co., and we will make sure you have your own unique waking adventure, tagged on to your Safari in Africa.
