Preparing To Travel

Can I use my frequent flyer miles?

Absolutely! Each traveller is responsible for their own airfare to and from Cape Town International Airport.

How much money should I bring?

We would recommend bringing about $200-$300 in smaller denominations. US dollars (USD) are widely accepted at our stops in Africa, and ATMS are also available at most spots. Smaller denominations can be easily exchanged in rural areas.

What will the climate be like?

It is the winter season in July in Southern Africa, expect pleasant days but brisk nights. July is also the wettest month of the year, with about an average of 100 mm of rain.
Average temperature: 13°C / 55°F
Average low temperature: 7°C / 45°F
Average high temperature: 17°C / 63°F

What type of luggage should I bring?

Luggage should be in a duffel-style bag or a soft bag (no hard shell suitcases), as it will be transported on vehicles. If you prefer, you can bring a main bag and a separate day backpack with a couple of essentials for a few days.

We would not recommend bringing an over-the-shoulder purse or tote bags.

What equipment should I bring?

We would recommend buying a quality pair of binoculars and a bright flashlight or head flashlight. Binoculars do not have to be very expensive, but since our safari drives will be intimate, you will want to use a pair to better watch the wildlife. The nights are dark, so you won’t regret getting a bright headlamp. Feel free to bring along your DSLR camera and extra memory cards, there will be plenty of opportunities to photograph landscapes and wildlife. Check here for a suggested equipment packing list.

What clothing should I pack?

We recommend bringing neutral-toned, breathable clothing, as well as a couple of layers for brisk nights. It’s important to bring a few long sleeved shirts and pants to ward off both mosquitos and the cold at night. Make sure that your light rain jacket can dry quickly in case we get caught in a rain shower! There will be laundry service available at mostly all lodges, but we recommend bringing undergarments that are easily washable so you can dry them overnight. Please do not bring hair dryers, as the lodges cannot hold the amounts of electricity they need to power. Check here for a clothing packing list.
